Biography
Mirwais Ashraf, born on June 30, 1988, in the Chardara district of Kunduz Province, is a former all-rounder for the Afghanistan national cricket team. He has represented Afghanistan in 46 One Day International (ODI) matches and 25 Twenty20 International (T20I) matches. As a medium-pace bowler, Ashraf relied heavily on seam movement and was also a dependable lower-order batsman, with several half-centuries in first-class and List-A cricket.
He made his ODI debut against the Netherlands at the VRA Cricket Ground on August 30, 2009. Notably, he also made his first-class debut in the Intercontinental Cup during Afghanistan's inaugural match against the same team, where he took 4 wickets for 24 runs in the second innings, helping Afghanistan achieve a historic one-wicket victory.
Ashraf was part of the Afghanistan squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015, where he delivered impressive performances with both bat and ball. In recognition of his contributions, he was appointed as Afghanistan’s ICC Ambassador for the Cricket World Cup 2019 in England and Wales.
He continued to play representative cricket until October 2020, representing the Band-e-Amir Dragons as well as participating in two editions of the regional List-A tournament from the Amo region. In September 2021, Ashraf was appointed as the Chief Selector of the Afghanistan Cricket Board, and two months later, on November 6, 2021, he became the Acting Chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board.
As Chairman, Mirwais Ashraf is dedicated to developing Afghan cricket and expanding the game across the country. He believes that cricket is not just a sport or a source of entertainment but also a significant source of aspirations, joy, and hope for Afghanistan's 35 million people.
Ashraf is committed to maintaining effective relationships with the government, the cricket governing body, and other cricketing nations to foster the development of Afghan cricket. He aims to facilitate more bilateral cricket matches for the Afghanistan National Team.
