Kabul, 11 March 2026: The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announces that the Afghanistan vs\r\nSri Lanka bilateral series, originally scheduled to commence on 13 March in the\r\nUnited Arab Emirates, has been rescheduled to the last quarter of 2026 due to\r\nlogistical challenges, including flight constraints arising from the ongoing\r\nregional situation.<\/b><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The series, which was to mark the first occasion of Afghanistan hosting\r\nSri Lanka, was scheduled to feature six white-ball matches. The three T20\r\nInternational matches were planned to be staged at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium\r\non 13, 15, and 17 March, followed by three One Day Internationals at the Dubai\r\nInternational Cricket Stadium on 20, 22, and 25 March.<\/o:p><\/font><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Following the receipt of the required sanction from the Emirates\r\nCricket Board (ECB), preparations had been finalized for hosting the matches\r\nacross the two venues. However, in early March, unforeseen developments created\r\nlogistical constraints that affected travel arrangements and operational\r\nplanning for the series.<\/o:p><\/font><\/p>\r\n\r\n

To address the situation, the Afghanistan Cricket Board held a series\r\nof consultations with key stakeholders, including the Emirates Cricket Board\r\n(ECB), Sharjah Cricket Stadium (SCS), and Dubai International Cricket Stadium\r\n(DICS). A joint meeting convened by the ACB on 4 March resulted in a\r\nrecommendation to monitor the situation and reassess by 6 March, in the hope\r\nthat conditions would improve. A subsequent follow-up meeting on 7 March\r\nrecommended waiting until 9 March before making a final determination.<\/o:p><\/font><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Despite the collective efforts of all parties to proceed with the event\r\nas planned, the logistical challenges remained beyond operational control,\r\nleading to the decision to postpone the series and explore rescheduling\r\noptions.<\/o:p><\/font><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Throughout this process, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) was kept\r\nfully informed, and the decision to postpone the series was made in\r\nconsultation and with the consent of Sri Lanka Cricket.<\/o:p><\/font><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The preferred venue for the rescheduled series remains the United Arab\r\nEmirates, and the new dates will be announced in due course following further\r\ncoordination between the respective boards and stakeholders.<\/o:p><\/font><\/p>\r\n\r\n

The Afghanistan Cricket Board extends its sincere appreciation to the\r\nEmirates Cricket Board, Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Dubai International Cricket\r\nStadium, and Sri Lanka Cricket for their continued cooperation and support in\r\naddressing this matter and safeguarding the interests of all parties involved.<\/font><\/p>

Top-order batter Ibrahim Zadran, who\r\npreviously served as the vice-captain in T20Is, has replaced Rashid Khan as the\r\ncaptain of the Afghanistan T20I team. <\/o:p><\/font><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Left-arm fast bowler Fazal Haq Farooqi,\r\nall-rounder Gulbadin Naib, and wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Ishaq, who were\r\npart of the squad for the T20 World Cup 2026, have been left out from both the squads.\r\n<\/o:p><\/font><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Meanwhile, top-order wicket-keeper batter,\r\nNoor Rahman, the left-arm spin bowling all-rounder, Sharafuddin Ashraf and\r\nleft-arm fast bowler Fareed Ahmad have been selected for the T20I squad.\r\nAdditionally, the Fareed Ahmad Malik makes his comeback to the ODI squad, while\r\nfast bowler, Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi receives his maiden call-up for the ODI team.\r\n<\/o:p><\/font><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Bilal Sami, who picked up a five-wicket haul\r\nand grabbed the Player of the Match award in his last ODI outing, retains his\r\nplace in the ODI squad and has also been added to the reserves pool in the T20I\r\nsquad. <\/o:p><\/font><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Alongside Bilal Sami, Nangyal Kharoti and Ijaz\r\nAhmadzai will be part of the T20I reserves, while Bashir Ahmad, Mohammad Saleem\r\nSafi and Qais Ahmad have been included in the reserves pool in the ODI squad. <\/o:p><\/font><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Richard Pybus is a globally respected cricket leader and performance\r\ndirector with a distinguished international coaching career. He is a three-time\r\nICC Cricket World Cup-winning Head Coach & Director of Cricket and brings a\r\nwealth of elite-level experience and a proven record of building\r\nhigh-performance systems.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

His recognized coaching journey includes serving as Head Coach,\r\nDirector of Cricket, and Head of High Performance for the West Indies cricket team\r\nfrom 2013 to 2019. During this period, he designed and managed the\r\nhigh-performance structure that led to a historic treble of ICC World Cup\r\nvictories in 2016, when the West Indies Men\u2019s, Women\u2019s, and U19 teams all\r\nsecured world titles in a single calendar year, which marked the first in the\r\nhistory of international cricket. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Previously, Pybus served as Head Coach of the Pakistan National Cricket Team and guided the side to the ICC Cricket World Cup Final in 1999, which they lost\r\nto Australia. He has also held a senior leadership role with the Bangladesh Cricket in 2013. Domestically, he has a strong coaching record in South African domestic &\r\nfranchise cricket, where the teams under his guidance secured nine championship\r\ntitles, which is also a national record. Additionally, he was named South\r\nAfrican Cricket Coach of the Year twice.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

He has also played a significant role in the development of individual\r\nplayers, including Pakistan\u2019s Mohammad Rizwan and South Africa\u2019s Faf Du\r\nPlessis. Additionally, he worked with Dale Steyn and helped him become one of\r\nthe greatest bowlers in the history of cricket.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

Beyond his on-field accomplishments, Pybus is a highly respected\r\nacademic and performance strategist. In 2022, he received a Doctorate in\r\nProfessional Practice from Middlesex University in London in recognition of his\r\nresearch on the principles behind the \u201cOptimal Performance System.\u201d This\r\nframework is designed to achieve consistent and winning results across various\r\ncultures and high-performance environments.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

In addition to his Doctorate, Pybus holds a postgraduate degree from\r\nGreenwich University in London and a BA Hons degree from Portsmouth University\r\nin the UK. <\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n

He is a Level Four CSA Certified Coach and has an Executive Coaching\r\nCertificate from the Neuroleadership Institute. Furthermore, he is a Certified\r\nPerformance Coach and a Master's Level NLP Practitioner.<\/o:p><\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n
