Afghanistan’s Future Tours
Program (2023-2027)
The International Cricket Council
has released the Future Tours Program (FTP) for the cycle from 2023 to 2027,
outlining Afghanistan's upcoming matches. During this period, Afghanistan is
set to play 21 Test matches, 45 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 57 Twenty20
Internationals (T20Is).
Afghanistan is scheduled to
compete in four series against Ireland and three series against Zimbabwe. They
will also face top teams like Australia, India, and New Zealand during this
cycle of the ICC Men’s Future Tours Program. The FTP announcement, which
results from a collaborative effort among Full Members with the support of the
ICC, ensures certainty in cricket fixtures by confirming all bilateral series
across three formats. The specific dates and venues for these series will be
announced by the respective Members in due course.
The maximum number of Test
matches for Afghanistan will be against Zimbabwe, with whom they will also play
12 ODIs and 12 T20Is, in addition to five Tests. Ireland, which gained Test
status alongside Afghanistan in 2017, will be another competitor, with four
Tests, 12 ODIs, and 10 T20Is on the agenda.
The FTP also confirms both home
and away commitments for matches against Australia, India, and New Zealand.
Naseeb Khan, the Chief Executive
Officer of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB), welcomed the FTP announcement.
He stated, “The Afghanistan Cricket Board is delighted to be a significant part
of the ICC’s Future Tours Program for the next cycle from 2023 to 2027. The
increased number of Test matches will greatly impact the growth of the game and
the development of our players, which is crucial for our future plans.
“We have always aspired to
compete against the major cricketing nations. According to the new cycle, we
are eagerly looking forward to playing red-ball cricket against them. Bilateral
cricket is also essential for both technical and financial growth, and we will
collaborate with our fellow boards to engage in more bilateral cricket.
“Additionally, these matches will
play a vital role in ensuring the financial stability of the ACB in the coming
years.”
It is important to acknowledge that the number of matches may fluctuate. The final number and format of the games will be determined following discussions between the two boards, taking into account the financial and logistical factors relevant to each series' designated window.
