Kabul: January 7, 2025 – The 16th edition of the Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan Provincial Grade II Tournament, marking the first domestic cricket event of the year, is set to begin on January 11. This tournament features 40 provincial teams divided into 8 groups, and matches will be held across four venues in the Khost, Nangarhar, Kunar, and Kandahar provinces.
The tournament will follow a one-day format, with a total of 80 matches scheduled to take place over 21 days, from January 11 to January 31. The 40 participating teams will be organized into 8 groups, each consisting of five teams.
Group A includes: Nangarhar, Faryab, Balkh, Kabul B, and Samangan provinces.
Group B consists of: Kunar, Logar, Jozjan, Kabul, and Badakhshan.
Group C features: Kandahar, Maidan Wardak, Kabul A, Zabul, and Bamyan.
Group D has: Khost, Kunduz A, Kabul C, Ghazni, and Takhar.
Group E includes: Khost A, Baghlan, Laghman, Parwan, and Farah.
Group F features: Nangarhar B, Kapisa, Kunduz, Paktika, and Nimroz.
Group G is made up of: Kandahar A, Paktia, Kabul D, Helmand, and Sar-e-Pul.
Group H comprises: Nanghar A, Herat, Khost B, Nooristan, and Kabul E.
Each team will compete once against every other team in their respective group. The teams with the most points in each group will proceed to the Provincial Grade One Tournament, a premier provincial one-day event organized by the Afghanistan Cricket Board, which will take place shortly after the conclusion of the Grade II tournament.
The upcoming Wazir Mohammad Akbar Khan Provincial Grade II Tournament is only the beginning of an exciting year for cricket in Afghanistan. It will be followed by the highly anticipated 12-team Grade One tournament scheduled for late February.
